One great way to deal with bumper to bumper traffic is the fast expanding subway system in Tehran and some other megacities.

The northern half of line 3 came on stream on September 22, 2015. With 28 stations, it runs 37 kilometers connecting Tehran’s South to its north. It intersects with other lines on its way and is the longest underground electric railway line to have been built in the Middle East to date.

This project accounts for only one of the Tehran Metro’s seven lines. Four of the lines are already in operation, and two others still under construction. The whole system that includes 5 lines at the moment, is 217 kilometers long and carries more than three million passengers a day. Metro authorities are hoping for the number of trips to rise to nine million a day once the construction of all the lines is completed.

The aircraft manufacturer ATR will start delivery of 20 aircrafts, which it has sold to Iran, in November 2016, said Thomas Enders, the chief executive of Airbus Group.

Enders said that delivery of the aircrafts will last until the end of 2018, the Tasnim news agency reported on Tuesday.

 

On February 1, Iran's national flag carrier, Iran Air, signed a contract with ATR to buy 20 light passenger planes, each capable of carrying 70 passengers, from the France-based company, according to Press TV.

 

The contract was signed through an official ceremony by managing directors of Iran Air and ATR.

 

ATR-72 has two turboprop engines, which is a form of gas turbine in which revolution of the turbine’s axis is used to move the propeller and generate the driving force. ATR-72 is suitable for short distance flights at speeds below 700 kilometers per hour and is considered an economical option due to lower fuel consumption and less expensive repairs compared to planes that use turbofan engines.

Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri has signed a series of preliminary agreements with leading Iranian companies worth several hundred millions of euros.  “Fincantieri has reached a cooperation and development agreement with Azim Gostaresh Hormoz Shipbuilding Industry Company, a new Iranian shipbuilding complex strategically positioned in the Persian Gulf within the Persian Gulf Special Economic Zone,” Fincantieri said in a statement as reported by Italian news agency AGI. The Iranian company is a subsidiary of Iran Shipbuilding and Offshore Industries Complex Company, which in turn owns the Industrial Development and Renovation Organization of Iran–one of the biggest Iranian companies active in the country’s process of development and industrialization.  According to Fincantieri, the agreement provides for cooperation between the two companies in the construction of new merchant ships and offshore units and in the field of naval repairs and conversions, as well as in the refitting of units already in use. Fincantieri, through its subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori, has also signed two other agreements in the marine propulsion and rail transport sectors, the report added.
