Lord Norman Lamont, President of Britain-Iran Chamber of Commerce expressed willingness to widen British economic ties with Iran and said that a British economic mission is heading to Iran in month of October.
Following is the full text of nterview with Lord Lamont conducted exclusively by IRNA London:
Q. How is status of Britain-Iran Chamber of Commerce? Has there been any developments planned after the Vienna nuclear deal?
A. It has been a very difficult period over the last decade because political relation have not been good, trade has declined and because of that our relationship has declined which has left us as an organization with financial difficulties. But I am very pleased to say that there now more people joining the chamber. British trade is at a very low level compared with other European countries, but now there is an enormous opportunity and obviously it is a function of the chamber try to take advantage of that.
The chamber has its own mission who are going in October. I cannot go on that trip although I would like to go and perhaps I could go next year, but that would be led by my colleague Sir Richard Dalton who is the former ambassador to Tehran. I hope that would be the first of many such missions.
Q. Who are the British mission? What areas are in your interest of the Iranian market?
A. There will be some people from oil and gas, some from the financial sector and some from services. The British economy is very services oriented;
Services can be traded internationally and I think that would be the pattern of world trade in the future.
Q. What is your prospect of the future trades with Iran?
A. First I believe this deal will be implemented; I think we should put the political past behind us; there is enormous complementarity between the two economies. I think Britain and Europe have a lot to offer Iran in terms of technology, expertise, high quality goods; There is no disrespect to China but I am not sure in every area will be the same quality as European goods and technology; So we are keen to do business with Iran.
Q. As the Vice chairman of the all party parliamentary group on Iran, how important is this group’s role in the British politics?
A. We try to interest other members of the house of common in what is happening in Iran, holding meetings that they can come to. We also had some members of the Majlis here and Jack Straw, Mr. Corbyn and I were in Iran just over a year ago. So I think it (All party parliamentary group on Iran) plays a part in the wider picture in improving relations which is very important.
We have to remember there are many misunderstanding about Iran in this country just as there are misunderstanding about the UK in Iran.
Q. What is your view on Iran’s role in the region?
A. Iran is a very important big country with 80 Million People; Iran had a revolution and after the Iraq war, relations with the west were not good, so I think time has moved on and Iran ought to have normal relations with the countries of the world.
Iran is already playing a major role in the Middle East and as President Rouhani said there are common interests between Iran and the west like fighting terrorism; Obviously we cannot expect the relationship to change immediately over night. But I am hopeful that it will change gradually.
Q. If the US president were not in favour of the nuclear deal, what would be the British position on this?
A. I think it would be very difficult for the future president of America to unpick a deal that not only have been passed by congress but have been partly implemented, so I think that would be a very serious thing to do.
The British government is enthusiastic to the deal, so I don’t think it would be anything other than dismay if there is going to be any change in American policy. We have stuck our flag to this policy and I hope we stick with it.
