Caspian littoral states have agreed to cooperate closely on facilitating transportation across the sea.
Transport ministers of the five countries — Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan — met in Tehran earlier this week to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in the region, reported Azerbaijan’s Azer News.
In their final statement, the ministers underscored the need to establish passenger shipping lines among regional states as well as the need to modernize infrastructures for air, sea, land and railway transport across the Caspian Sea.
Other decisions included setting up logistical centers and also increasing the facilities for transiting goods in the region.
Iran said in June that it had launched a shipping line in the Caspian Sea to ferry goods to Russia and Kazakhstan. It said the shipping line was meant to increase the competitiveness of Iranian products in regional markets.
It views transportation facilities across the Caspian as an important step toward the development of the North-South Transport Corridor which connects Oman, Iran, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
In March 2015, President Hassan Rouhani called for serious efforts to materialize the project, stressing that it can serve the economic interests of the countries in the region.
"Iran and Turkmenistan are determined to activate the North-South Corridor… to meet the interests of all countries in the region," he said in a press conference with his Turkmen counterpart, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, in Ashgabat.
Turkmenistan is also looking at the Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey transportation route. This was formalized in Ashgabat in November 2014 when a draft agreement was signed. This rail freight route in Central Asia connects Turkmenistan and Afghanistan to the Black Sea, opening up European markets and offering greater cross-regional trading opportunities.

Australian ambassador to Iran has announced the intention of his country’s trade commission to send a delegation to Tehran in line with boosting bilateral trade ties despite US’s approval of visa waiver program.
Paul Foley met and talked with Head of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture Masoud Khansari on Saturday; “Australia is determined to dispatch a trade delegation to Iran regardless of the proclaimed limitations on the part of the US,” asserted the Australian ambassador.

He further pointed out the strength of Iran and Australia in the field of mineral activities highlighting the possibility to conduct close and effective cooperation in the area.

“In the past, several Australian companies were active in Iran though they had to reduce operation before ending their task due to strict sanctions,” he asserted.

Foley expressed Australian companies’ willingness to return to Iran despite the fact that the level of collaboration between the two countries has fluctuated widely over the recent year.

The Australian official also maintained that Australia is ready for cooperation with Iran in various areas like agriculture, education, mines and mining industries, oil, gas and service relating to the industries.

“Australia is eager to see the country's economic activists visit Tehran to hold negitiations with their commercial partners,” said the official.

Head of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture Masoud Khansari, for his part, noted the long history of Iran-Australia trade relations adding “the trade volume between the two countries has shrunk over the past few years as a result of severe sanctions.”

“About 80 business delegations have visited Iran since the approval of JCPOA while no Australian delegation has travelled to Iran yet,” added Khansari.

“Australia’s economic activists are apparently following a conservative approach,” noted the Iranian official expressing hope that the presence of the two countries’ trade delegations will lead to reinvigorating of Tehran-Canberra relations.

Recent editions of many international tourism journals, including National Geographic, have referred to Iran as a top emerging tourism destination, which can contribute to rise in the number of foreign tourist arrivals to the country, said Morteza Rahmani Movahed, the deputy head of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization.

"We have reached an overall consensus that expansion of tourism is vital for Iran to expedite sustainable development and increase employment," said Rahmani Movahed at a groundbreaking ceremony for the largest tourism and recreational complex of Sirjan, in Kerman Province.

The official said tourism industry would provide Iran with sustainable earnings.

"Tourism industry generates nine percent of global GDP whereas in Iran, tourism is responsible for 6.5 percent of the GDP," he noted.

Rahmani Movahed said the Iran has made ceaseless efforts to promote tourism following the agreement with P5+1 on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Noting that Sixth Development Plan (2016-2021) has placed great importance on expansion of tourism, Rahmani Movahed said Iran is to host the 2017 World Federation of Tourist Guide Association in line with the development of the tourism industry.

The official described southern Kerman Province as one of the most attractive provinces in Iran, whose three historical sites namely Bam Citadel, Shahzadeh Garden, and Pre-historical Meymand Village, have been registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

"Cisterns of Kerman and Lut Desert, known as ‘Kavir-e Lut’, will soon be registered on the World Heritage List," he said, explaining that Kavir-e Lut is Iran's first natural attraction up for global registration.

The official said the number of foreign visitors to Kerman Province has witnessed a growth of between 30 and 35 percent over the past two years.

"Kerman has an important role in the growth of tourism industry," he said.

Russians tourists

Also, Jalal Ebrahimi, the head of Iran-Turkey Joint Trade Council, said many countries seek to draw Russian tourists from Turkey and Egypt following downing of Russian airplane by Turkey which led to the deterioration in relations of the two nations.

He said Iran must take advantage of this to attract Russians.

Ebrahim Pourfaraj, the head of Association of Tour Guides, said Russian tourists are generally go for beach and sunbathing, which makes it hard to attract them to Iran since it is more known for historical and cultural attractions.

"However, Iran can still earn huge revenues from that few numbers of Russians who prefer Iran's historical sites and natural attractions," he said.

Pourfaraj said Russian have a poor knowledge about Iran in view of the low publicity.

He said Iran has recently set up an office in Russia to introduce the country's tourism sites to the Russians.

Statistics show that about 8,500 Russians visited Iran in 2014.

Iran has recently announced that it welcomes visa waivers for Russian tourists thus easing travel restrictions and increase the number of Russian arrivals to the country.
