President Hassan Rouhani said Iran is the best international corridor for millions of passengers jetting between the capital cities of the East and the West.

"Not only is Iran the closest and best air hub to link the West and the East, but it also is the best means for transferring culture and politics," Rouhani said Wednesday, addressing a gathering to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of Iran's national carrier, Homa Airline, in Tehran.

Emphasizing the need for Iran to revive its role in linking different parts of the world through air, sea and road, he said, Homa and the country's air fleet should join hands to turn the country into the largest single air market in the region in terms of both domestic and international traveling.

Iran is now pushing full throttle to re-establish business with the rest of the world as Western companies move to renew ties abandoned during economic sanctions that largely ended after the nuclear deal.

British Airways, meanwhile, is actively exploring a Tehran service, Willie Walsh, chief executive of the carrier’s parent International Consolidated Airlines Group SA, said earlier this month. Other airlines, including discount carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle, are considering similar moves. Air France-KLM last year disclosed plans to resume flights.

Plane deals also are on the runway. Iran had a deal with Airbus Group SE to acquire 114 planes. Airbus said it would enter into business with Iranian airlines in compliance with all international laws.
